S UPERVISOR ’ S C HECKLIST FOR P REPARING FOR H EARING
Carefully review the grievance, as well as the appeal letter or document requesting the hearing to identify which facts are in dispute.
Review any applicable CBA provisions, district policies, rules, regulations, or procedures.
Review relevant past practice, including relevant past practices in other departments, other campuses and the district office.
Consider visiting the scene of events to refresh one’s understanding of the facts.
Select and recommend witnesses and questions for management counsel’s consideration.
Assess key points which the supervisor feels strengthens management’s case in this particular grievance and which would be helpful in strengthening arguments.
Consider the grievant’s major points—and the strengths and weaknesses of the grievance.
Communicate with other members of the management team for their advice and experience with similar grievance issues.
Coordinate with the district’s HR Director and/or Labor Relations Officer.
